BY THE NUMBERS: 3
The 2022-23 edition of Macomb Women's Basketball returns a strong veteran presence with
three (3) third-year players on the roster. The trio of
Rayonna Armstrong,
Valina Hudgins and
Amy Jackson are back for year three for the Blue & White, while fellow returner and second-year player
Rylee Thomas returns to the lineup as well.
BY THE NUMBERS: 84
Speaking of returners, 2021-22 All-Conference performer
Amy Jackson is back after draining a Macomb single-season record
84 3-pointers last season. The sharpshooting forward broke the previous program record of 75 triples made in a single season and did so while averaging 15 points per game and over three 3-pointers per contest.
BACK ON THE HARDWOOD!
By the time Tuesday's (Nov. 1) season-opening tip-off comes around at 5:30 p.m., it will have been eight months since we last saw the Monarchs in action. Last season, the Monarchs finished 15-13 overall and an even 8-8 in conference play. While the Monarchs return quite a bit of production, gone is DeBraya Edwards (Albion College) who led the team in scoring a season ago.
RAY'S RETURN
After an amazing freshman season in 2020-21 that culminated in a WER All-American selection, as well as All-Region, All-MCCAA and All-Conference accolades,
Rayonna Armstrong went down with a season-ending injury 11 minutes into the 2021-22 campaign. After a long journey back, Armstrong will make her long-awaited return to the lineup this season for the Monarchs!
TALENTED INCOMING CLASS
Revamped and reloaded! The women's basketball staff, led by
Jay Ritchie in his 14th season, brought in a strong recruiting class this offseason. The new names on the roster include transfers
Jasmine Ellis and
Ryleigh Sanom, as well as incoming freshmen
Jaelynn Jones,
Talia Krause,
Kamryn Richards,
Hannah Roberts and
Tamia Tounsel.
HUDGINS BRINGS THE BALANCE
One of three third-year players on this year's roster,
Valina Hudgins will look to build off a 2021-22 season that resulted in the forward averaging a balanced 8.1 points and 7.5 rebounds per game to go along with 43 steals and 32 assists while starting in all 26 contests.
YEAR 14!
Back for year 14 on the sidelines leading the women's basketball program, former Macomb Men's Basketball standout (go check out the men's basketball record book, you'll see)
Jay Ritchie will look to build off an impressive career record that features 267 wins, five Conference Championships, four Region Titles, four NJCAA National Championship berths and a pair of MCCAA Championships.
TWO FIRST-YEAR TEAMS AHEAD
The 2022-23 season will get underway Tuesday (Nov. 1) when the Monarchs host the Lions of Detroit Community Christian College at 5:30 p.m. in Warren. On Friday (Nov. 4), the Monarchs will take on the Roadrunners of Southwestern Michigan College at the Lake Michigan Showcase. The Lions will play for the first time ever, while the Roadrunners will play for the first time in 26 years.
A LOOK AT: LAKE MICHIGAN
One of the strongest and most consistent programs in the MCCAA Western Conference, the Red Hawks of Lake Michigan College will welcome in the Monarchs for the Red Hawk Showcase Nov. 4-5 on their Benton Harbor campus. The Red Hawks went 18-10 (12-6 MCCAA West) last season and return two of their top three scorers.
