BY THE NUMBERS: 19
Macomb Women's Basketball earned a season-opening, 72-62, victory over a tough Kellogg team thanks to balanced play and a gritty effort down the stretch. Down one at the half and tied through three quarters of play, the Monarchs (1-0) outscored the Bruins
19-9 over the game's final 10 minutes to earn the season-opening victory.
BY THE NUMBERS: 20
Two huge reasons why the Monarchs pulled away to win the opener was the play of
Marissa Thomas and
Tamia Tounsel as the pair of sophomores both poured in
20+ points. Tounsel started her sophomore campaign with a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Thomas debuted with 21 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
THE BALANCE WAS THERE
While Thomas and Tounsel combined for nearly 60% of the scoring, the Monarchs received contributions throughout the roster as
Enddiea Reese tallied 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while
Kamryn Richards had nine points and six boards.
Hannah Roberts tied Tounsel for a game-high 11 rebounds and
Olicia Porritt recorded six points.
WON KEY BATTLES
In a back-and-forth game that featured eight ties and seven lead changes, the Monarchs were able to pull away late and earn the 10-point victory after edging the Bruins in several key statistical categories. The Monarchs won the following key battles in last week's triumph: points in the paint, 30-20; bench points, 18-5; points off turnovers, 14-6; fast break points, 12-7; and second chance points, 12-10.
A LOOK AT: DELTA
The Delta Pioneers have started the 2023-24 season with an 0-2 record after playing a pair of tough MCCAA Eastern Conference teams. Despite being 0-2 (at the time of this release), the Pioneers went down to the wire in each contest, losing both by single digits. Alecsis Smith's 14 points per game leads three in double figures for the Pioneers.
A LOOK AT: MADONNA JV
Not much is known about the Madonna JV team, but in games we could find results for the Crusaders are 0-2 with both setbacks coming to MCCAA competition. On Nov. 2, the Crusaders fell to Jackson, 66-47, before dropping a 61-57 decision to Muskegon on Nov. 6.
ABOUT THOSE SEASON OPENERS
With last week's 72-62 win over Kellogg, the Monarchs improved to 8-2 over their last 10 season openers (4-1 in the past five seasons) under the leadership of head coach
Jay Ritchie. Last year, the Monarchs earned the program's 14th highest margin of victory in the opener after defeating visiting Community Christian College by a 96-33 final tally.
FIVE STRAIGHT ROAD GAMES
After two home contests this week, the Monarchs will hit the road for five consecutive away games. The lengthy road swing includes difficult stops at every turn, beginning at DIII No. 3 Owens on Nov. 21. The Monarchs visit reigning District A Champion, Mid Michigan, on Dec. 8 and North Central Michigan on Dec. 9 before trips to Glen Oaks (Dec. 15) and Kalamazoo Valley (Dec. 16) to close out their five-game road swing.
AROUND THE MCCAA EAST
The 2023-24 non-conference slate is underway for all eight MCCAA Eastern Conference teams. Through two weeks of action, three teams remain unbeaten as No. 18 Jackson is 4-0, followed by a pair of 1-0 teams in No. 14 Schoolcraft and Macomb. Wayne County checks in at 2-1 while SC4 is even at 1-1, OCC is 1-2, Mott is 0-2 and Henry Ford is 0-3.
