#1 FOR BURNS, #800 FOR MACOMB
What a day it was in Warren! Macomb Men's Basketball opened the lid on the 2023-24 season with a 101-89 victory over Cuyahoga and made history in the process. Saturday's season-opening victory was the first for first-year head coach
Christopher Burns and was the 800th win in the storied history of Macomb Men's Basketball.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Let's take a look 'Inside the Numbers' from Saturday's box score. While Cuyahoga was dialed in from 3-point territory, the Monarchs remained committed to attacking the rim and went on to outscore the Triceratops by a resounding 62-26 margin in the paint for one of the game's most lopsided statistics. In all, the Monarchs shot 48.8% from the field, paced by a red-hot 60% clip in the second half.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE
While Saturday's win was a product of a team effort, Grand Valley State University transfer,
Parker Day, enjoyed quite the debut to help the Blue & White emerge victorious. Day recorded the game's lone double-double after posting 20 points on a 50% shooting effort and corralling a game-high 12 rebounds to pace Saturday's action.
HARD WORK PAYS OFF
One of many strong performances in the opener came via sophomore guard
Justin James. The hard-working second year guard opened the season with his first career start and made the most of it by pouring in a career-high 19 points and adding five assists in the victory.
A LOOK AT: #17 ELLSWORTH
One of the toughest tests on the Monarchs entire schedule, the No. 17 Ellsworth Panthers, led by second-year head coach Bryan Bender, are 3-0 on the season after most recently downing Kansas City Kansas on Tuesday. The Panthers are paced by a tandem of skilled scorers in Jaron Crews (22 PPG) and Jordan Glenn-Hawkins (16 PPG).
A LOOK AT: IOWA WESTERN
One day after taking on what many consider to be a top five team in the country, regardless of rank, the Monarchs will battle another powerful program when they take on the Iowa Western Reivers. The Reivers are 2-1 on the season and have outscored the opposition by an average of 43 points in their wins. Ikenna Ude-Smith (16.0 PPG) and Jadon Cool (13.7 PPG) lead a balanced Iowa Western attack.
BACK HOME NEXT WEEK
After a trip out to Iowa to take on a pair of Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) powers, the Monarchs return to Warren next week for their final two home games of the non-conference slate. On Wednesday, the Monarchs host Delta at 7:30 p.m. Then on Friday, the Monarchs welcome CBG Prep to Warren for an 8 p.m. contest.
