MCCAA Eastern Conference play gets underway Saturday when the Monarchs visit Schoolcraft for a 1 p.m. tip-off. The Monarchs have won five conference titles in program history,
four (4) with head coach
Jay Ritchie at the helm. The Monarchs most recently won back-to-back league crowns in 2019-20 & 2020-21 when they went 43-0 over that span.
MONARCH REWIND
The Monarchs saw their five-game winning streak come to an end Saturday (Jan. 6) in a heartbreaking 54-53 overtime setback to Kalamazoo Valley. Prior to the narrow overtime loss, the Monarchs ripped off five consecutive wins, the last coming on Friday in a 64-60 victory against a talented Muskegon team at the SC4 New Year's Classic.
SCORING LEADERS
The talented tandem of
Marissa Thomas and
Tamia Tounsel continue to lead the scoring column for a balanced Monarchs team that features five players averaging six or more points per game (PPG). Tounsel leads the Monarchs at 14.7 PPG and is followed in double digits by Thomas at 13.4 PPG.
Sydney Garon checks in at 8.3 PPG, while
Kamryn Richards and
Enddiea Reese average 8.3 and 6.1 PPG, respectively.
LET THE (LEAGUE) GAMES BEGIN!
As mentioned, conference play tips off Saturday (Jan. 13) on the road at Schoolcraft. Saturday's conference opener begins a 14-game league slate as the Monarchs play two rounds of games against their seven MCCAA East counterparts (one home & one away). The first conference home game will take place Jan. 20 against Mott at 1 p.m.
PORRITT'S HOT HAND
Sophomore guard and former Mt. Clemens High School standout,
Olicia Porritt, has been steady from long range this season. Through 12 games, Porritt is shooting a red-hot 41.5% from 3-point land and most recently knocked down three triples against KVCC.
A LOOK AT: SCHOOLCRAFT
The Schoolcraft College Ocelots enter league play as one of the favorites after earning a conference title in 2021-22 and finishing near the top last year with a 20-4 overall record. This season, the Ocelots are 9-3 overall and are receiving votes (RV) in the national poll. As a team, the Ocelots are stingy defensively, allowing 50.3 PPG on 31.1% shooting.
STAT SHEET STUFFERS
Thanks to seven double-doubles on the season, sophomore forward
Tamia Tounsel leads the Monarchs with a near double-double average of 14.7 PPG and 9.9 rebounds per game (RPG).
Marissa Thomas and
Danielle Billinger follow Tounsel on the glass at 5.8 and 5.5 RPG, respectively, while Thomas dishes out a team-high 4.2 assists per game. Tounsel and Thomas also average two or more steals per game this season.
INSIDE THE WINNING STREAK
After a 3-3 start to the season, the Monarchs went on a tear, winning five straight games behind balanced play on both ends of the floor. In the five-game winning streak, the Monarchs outscored the opposition by an average of 27 points per game (72.6-45.6) and held their opponents to 73 made field goals during that stretch (28.5% shooting overall).
