A career day! Macomb Women's Basketball earned a 66-56 home win over Alma JV on Dec. 30 behind a spirited second half effort and a career day by sophomore forward,
Tamia Tounsel! Tounsel poured in a new career-high
26 points on 10-of-15 shooting and corralled 12 rebounds to help lift the Monarchs to the win and push their record to 7-3.
BY THE NUMBERS: 8
After trailing by three at the half (27-24) to Alma JV, the Monarchs turned the tide quickly as the Blue & White started the third quarter on a 15-3 run to flip the three-point deficit into a 39-30 advantage. Over half of the points in the run came from
Sydney Garon as freshman wing dropped in
eight (8) of her 11 points in the 15-3 burst. Garon's strong play helped the Monarchs earn a 10 point home victory.
WHAT'S AHEAD?
The Monarchs will tip off 2024 in Port Huron this weekend as they prepare to take part in the Skippers New Years Classic on Jan. 5 & 6 at the SC4 Fieldhouse. On Friday, the Monarchs will begin the two-day classic with a matchup against Muskegon at 2 p.m. Then at 11 a.m. Saturday, the Monarchs will battle KVCC for the second time this season.
SCORING LEADERS
The talented tandem of
Marissa Thomas and
Tamia Tounsel continue to lead the scoring column for a balanced Monarchs team that features five players averaging six or more points per game (PPG). Tounsel leads the Monarchs at 15.1 PPG and is followed in double digits by Thomas at 13.3 PPG.
Sydney Garon checks in at 9.1 PPG, while
Kamryn Richards and
Enddiea Reese average 7.8 and 6.1 PPG, respectively.
ANOTHER HUGE PERFORMANCE
As referenced in our 'By The Numbers' segment, sophomore forward
Tamia Tounsel put together a huge performance that resulted in a 66-56 win over Alma JV and the former Dakota standout's fifth double-double of the campaign. Tounsel recorded a career-best 26 points and hauled in 12 rebounds to help lift the Monarchs to a perfect 4-0 home record.
THOMAS PROVIDES BALANCE
While Tounsel led the way in the 10 point home win over the Scots, the balanced play of sophomore guard
Marissa Thomas helped fuel the Monarchs to their seventh win of the season. Thomas tallied 13 points to go along with nine rebounds and six assists in the victory.
A LOOK AT: MUSKEGON
The Jayhawks of Muskegon Community College enter this weekend's Skippers New Years Classic with a 6-4 overall record after most recently defeating Mott CC, 55-49, on Dec. 16. The Jayhawks average 61 points per game and are led by Ty'veonna Davis who posts a team-best 17.4 points and 7.4 rebounds per game this season.
SO WE MEET AGAIN
On Saturday, the Monarchs will square off with the KVCC Cougars for the second time this season. The Monarchs shot out to an early lead and never looked back in the first meeting of the season to win 71-48 at KVCC on Dec. 16. The win kept the Monarchs winning streak alive, a streak that now sits at four games entering this weekend's action. Brynne Johnson leads the 3-6 Cougars in scoring at 15.2 points per game.

Tamia Tounsel hauls in a team-best 9.5 rebounds per game (RPG), while three others follow with five or more per contest.
