BY THE NUMBERS: 4
Back to Danville! Macomb Men's Basketball won the Great Lakes District B Championship on Sunday (March 10) to punch their return ticket to the National Championship! At 28-3 overall, the Monarchs earned the
four (4) seed and will take on the play-in winner between (13) North Central Missouri and (20) United Tribes on March 19 at 10 a.m. ET.
BY THE NUMBERS: 28
With Sunday's win, the Monarchs won a MCCAA Conference Championship, MCCAA (State) Championship and Region 12 (District) Championship in the same season for the first time in program history. At
28-3, the Monarchs have tied the record for most wins in program history, a mark that was set by last year's National Runner-Up team.
THE DEEPEST FIELD TO DATE
With the NJCAA's expansion of the DII National Championship to 20 teams (to include four at-large bids), this rendition of the national tournament features undoubtedly the deepest field in NJCAA DII history. Notably, four of the top 11 teams in the final national poll were knocked off in their district tournament, but play on thanks to receiving at-large bids (including two of the top four teams).
BALANCED TEAM PLAY
Juwan Maxey leads five in double figures at 16.3 points per game (PPG), followed by
Tymias Williams who nets 15.3 PPG.
Parker Day and
Nate Brown are next at 12.5 and 12.2 PPG, respectively, while
Josh Hines checks in at 11.6 PPG. The balance continues with the following averages:
Kyle Millender (8.9),
Jotham Nweke (8.9),
Tate MacKenzie (8.3),
Justin James (7.4),
Marlon Williams (5.0) and
DaMaryon Fishburn (4.7).
POSTSEASON HONORS
Congrats goes out to all who earned postseason honors, led by
Juwan Maxey (All-Region, All-MCCAA, First Team All-Conference) and
Tymias Williams (All-Region, All-MCCAA, First Team All-Conference and All-Defensive Team). Six other Monarchs earned All-Conference awards, including
Parker Day (Second Team All-Conference),
Nate Brown (Third Team All-Conference),
Josh Hines (Third Team All-Conference and All-Freshman Team),
Justin James (Honorable Mention All-Conference),
Kyle Millender (Honorable Mention All-Conference) and
Jotham Nweke (Honorable Mention All-Conference). First-year head coach
Christopher Burns earned his third Coach of the Year honor following a vote of the league's head coaches and has now earned MCCAA Coach of the Year, Great Lakes District B Coach of the Year and MCCAA Eastern Conference Coach of the Year.
ANOTHER TOURNAMENT RUN?
As the four-seed, the highest seed in program history, the Monarchs are looking to make another run this season as they compete for a national title. Last year, the eighth-seeded Monarchs made a magical run to the National Championship Game after upending top-seeded Davidson-Davie and the hometown and fourth-seeded Jaguars.
A LOOK AT THE PLAY-IN GAME
The Monarchs received a first round bye and will play the winner of Monday's (March 18) play-in game between (13) North Central Missouri and (20) United Tribes. While United Tribes comes in as the Cinderella, North Central Missouri was ranked 11th in the final national poll and has amassed a 25-6 record that includes a win over the No. 3 seed at the National Championship, Ellsworth CC.
AROUND THE BRACKET
Should the Monarchs advance in their opening game against the play-in winner, they will meet the winner of the (5) National Park vs. (12) Johnson County contest. National Park is 27-1 with their lone loss coming in the region championship, while Johnson County is 28-5. The upper quadrant on the Monarchs side features top seed Davidson-Davie and the fourth-ranked team in the country, Des Moines Area CC (No. 8 seed, at-large).
ADDITIONAL STAT LEADERS
Tymias Williams leads a balanced cast on the glass with 7.8 rebounds per game (RPG), followed by
Parker Day (7.5),
Juwan Maxey (5.9) and
Tate MacKenzie (5.8).
Justin James has dished out a team-best 106 assists (3.4 APG) and leads the way in steals with 52, while Maxey has drained a team-leading 93 3-pointers at a 42% clip.
