WASHINGTON TWP., Mich. – For the first time since 1996, Macomb Men's Cross Country is adding to its trophy case as the Monarchs recorded a first place finish on Friday (Sept. 20) at Stony Creek Metropark to earn the 2024 MCCAA Eastern Conference Championship. The Monarchs earned the conference title with a season-best effort against a highly competitive Eastern Conference field.
Dylan Penberthy (New Haven, Mich./L'Anse Creuse North) was the first of four Monarchs in the top five and one of seven who earned MCCAA East All-Conference honors. Penberthy crossed the 8K finish line in second place overall at 27:42, earning MCCAA East Freshman of the Year honors, while
Jack DeWaele (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) followed in third place at 28:10 and Dylan's twin brother,
Brandon Penberthy (New Haven, Mich./L'Anse Creuse North), was fourth at 28:19.
Gabe Rusch (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay) was fifth after crossing the finish line at 28:28 and
Carson Gilbertson (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) was seventh at 28:41.
Following the scoring members for the Monarchs was the Fraser combo of
Lucas Shemansky (Fraser, Mich./Fraser) and
Connor Steepe (Fraser, Mich./Fraser) who finished 12
th and 14
th, respectively. Shemansky checked in with a time of 29:16 and Steepe followed closely at 29:27.
Preston Corneillie (Richmond, Mich./Richmond),
Mathieu Fortier (Clinton Twp., Mich./Lakeview) and
Daryl Winters III (Detroit, Mich./Warren Mott) closed out day for the Monarchs with strong performances as the program celebrated its best day on the course in nearly 30 years.
