Preview: Women’s Basketball Competes in Montcalm Shootout This Weekend

The Monarchs will take on Cuyahoga on Saturday before wrapping up their weekend with a Sunday tilt opposite Grand Rapids.

WARREN, Mich. – The Macomb Women's Basketball team (3-1) will look to put together a winning streak this Thanksgiving weekend when they travel to Montcalm Community College to take on a pair of Region XII opponents. The Monarchs will first match up with Cuyahoga Community College on Saturday (Nov. 29) at 1 p.m. before closing the weekend against Grand Rapids Community College at 5 p.m. Sunday.
 
LAST TIME OUT: Macomb earned their second win with a 70-51 victory over Madonna University JV in Livonia on Nov. 20. The Monarchs had an outstanding effort defensively, recording 23 steals as a team and forcing 34 Madonna turnovers. MyKenzi Harris led the Monarchs with a career-high totals in points (21) and steals (9). A'Liyah Forris and Janiya McWilliams added 11 points each, while Asiyah Jihad had a balanced stat line of 10 points, six rebounds and six steals. 
 
SCOUTING CUYAHOGA: Out of the OCCAC, the Triceratops are undefeated at 8-0 overall. Cuyahoga most recently earned a decisive 108-38 victory over Community Christian College (Mich.) on Tuesday night. 
 
Offensively, the Triceratops are led by Syair Young with an even 20 points per game. Another player to watch is La'Nia Moore, who's averaging a double-double with 16.7 points and 14.9 rebounds per game. Jayleena Bauzo and Summer Hastings each average 12.9 points per contest. 
 
The Triceratops are led by head coach Dion Griffin. 
 
SCOUTING GRAND RAPIDS: The Raiders are 5-2 overall, with their two losses coming to a ranked Lake Land College team and NJCAA Division I Olney Central College. GRCC most recently earned a 56-35 victory over Kirtland Community College on Monday night. 
 
GRCC is averaging 71.3 points per game while holding opponents to 49.7 per contest. Tianna Daye, the reigning MCCAA Western Conference Player of the Week, leads the Raiders offensively with 15.2 points per game. Sophia Wazniak is tallying 13.0 points per night, while Averi Peot is the leading rebounder with 7.2 per contest. 
 
Dave Glazier is in his 10th season as head coach of the Raiders.
 
A LOOK AT MACOMB: The Monarchs are averaging 69.8 points per game as a team, while holding opponents to 62.5 per contest. Solid on the defensive end, the Monarchs have registered 13.5 steals per game and are forcing a total of 24.5 turnovers per contest. Jihad is leading the team in scoring at 18 points per game, while Harris follows with 13 points per game. Forris is the other double-digit scorer with 11.8 points per contest. 
 
On the glass, Jihad has been a dominant force with 9.3 rebounds per night. Harris averages a team-best 4.5 steals per game and dishes out a team-leading 3.1 assists per outing.
 
McWilliams is just outside double figures on the offensive end with 9.3 points per game. Macomb as a team is shooting 40.9 percent from the field.
