Back-to-Back! No. 9 Monarchs Capture Second Consecutive MCCAA East Championship

Jacon Kosidlo Earned East Runner of the Year honors after recording a first place finish!

WASHINGTON, Mich. – Make that two in a row! The No. 9 Macomb men's cross country team captured their second consecutive MCCAA Eastern Conference title on Friday (Sept. 26) at Stoney Creek Metropark. 

With just five runners, the ninth-ranked Monarchs scored 34 points, finishing 18 ahead of runner-up St. Clair County Community College. Mott Community College took home third place in the team standings with 59 points. 

Freshman Jacob Kosidlo finished in first place individually and was named MCCAA Eastern Conference Runner of the Year for his efforts. Kosidlo continued his stellar collegiate debut season with an 8K time of 27:14.5 to also earn All-Conference and All-Freshman Team honors. Fellow freshman Michael Nivala Jr. crossed the line in third with a time of 27:41.2 and sophomore Brandon Penberthy was right behind in fourth place in 27:54.7. 

Jack DeWaele, a sophomore, was the fourth Monarch to cross the line with a sixth place finish and time of 28:19.2. Mathieu Fortier concluded the scoring for Macomb in 20th place with a time of 30:21.3. 

With their performances today, Kosidlo, Nivala Jr., Penberthy, and DeWaele earned MCCAA Eastern Conference All-Conference honors. All-Conference honors went to the top 14 finishers from Friday's title race. Kosidlo and Nivala also earned All-Freshman honors after being in the top six among freshmen athletes in the race. 

Macomb will be back in action next Saturday (Oct. 4) at the SWAGS Louisville Cross Country Classic from E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Kentucky.
