Preview: Monarchs Continue Homestand Wednesday in Detroit

The Monarchs host SC4 on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. before welcoming OCC to Wayne State's Matthaei Center on Saturday at 1 p.m.

WARREN, Mich. – After going 2-0 last week in MCCAA Eastern Conference play, the Macomb Women's Basketball team will look to continue their winning ways with a pair of home games in the week ahead. The homestand rolls on Wednesday (Jan. 21) against St. Clair County Community College at 5:30 p.m. and wraps up on Saturday at 1 p.m. opposite Oakland Community College. Both games will be played at Wayne State University's Matthaei Center in Detroit. 
 
Macomb enters the week 13-5 overall, 2-1 in the MCCAA Eastern Conference and remains in the NJCAA Division II poll in the receiving votes section.
 
A LOOK AT SC4: The Skippers boast a 12-6 overall record and have opened conference play with a perfect 3-0 mark after most recently defeating Jackson College on the road in overtime, 79-73. The overtime victory lifted the Skippers' winning streak to four games.
 
Iliana Williams paces a balanced Skippers attack at 15.1 points per game and pulls down 11.2 rebounds per contest. Reigning MCCAA Eastern Conference Player of the Week, Kyrieona Carter, hauls in a team-best 14.3 boards per game while averaging 13.1 points per outing. Myana Cooksey is also in double figures scoring at 13.6 points per game. 
 
The Skippers are one of the best rebounding teams in the country, ranking fourth nationally in NJCAA Division II with 51.9 boards per game.
SC4 is led by head coach Mike Groulx, who was the Great Lakes District A Coach of the Year in 2024-25 after leading the Skippers to a district crown and NJCAA DII National Tournament appearance. 
 
A LOOK AT OCC: OCC is 4-12 overall and 1-2 in MCCAA Eastern Conference action after splitting their games last week. The Owls most recently earned a 90-81 victory over Henry Ford College on Saturday for their first conference win of the year, snapping a three-game losing streak. A 99-83 loss at St. Clair County Community College opened the week.
 
A player to watch is Larissa Gibson, who leads the team in scoring (12.3 PPG) and rebounding (6.5 RPG). Tracy Ludescher averages 11.4 points per contest, while Madison Spanicciati has netted 10.8 points per night. 
 
The Owls are led by second-year head coach Bob Belf, who led the team to a fifth-place finish in the MCCAA Eastern Conference last year. 
 
A LOOK AT MACOMB: Behind a career high 22 points from Janiya McWilliams, the Monarchs defeated Mott Community College, 80-69, on Saturday at Wayne State's Matthaei Center in Detroit. 
 
McWilliams added six rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal in 39 minutes of action in the Mott win. A'Liyah Forris posted 21 points, three rebounds and three assists. The point total matched Forris' 21-point effort earlier in the week in the 94-54 road victory at Henry Ford on Wednesday. 
 
Asiyah Jihad registered 14 points and eight rebounds as she continues to average a double-double for second-year head coach Kirk Carolan and the Monarchs with 15.3 points and 10.9 boards per contest. 
 
MyKenzi Harris posted a balanced stat line Saturday of seven points, four rebounds and three steals. The three thefts helped Harris remain second on the team in steals with 2.6 per game. 
 
As a team, the Monarchs are averaging 67.3 points per game and pulling down 40.0 rebounds per contest. The Monarch defense has held opponents to 58.9 points per contest, fifth best in the MCCAA, and has recorded 11.1 steals per game. 
 
RECENT SERIES HISTORY: SC4 has won the last three meetings over Macomb, sweeping the season series last year and earning a 72-57 victory in the Great Lakes District A Quarterfinals. The Monarchs' last win over the Skippers came on Feb. 17, 2024, in a 62-58 win in Port Huron. 
 
Against OCC, the Monarchs are riding a four-game winning streak. OCC's last win over Macomb was a 43-42 victory on March 2, 2023, in the regular season finale.

UP NEXT: The Monarchs will hit the road next Wednesday (Jan. 28) to take on Wayne County Community College at 5:30 p.m., before returning home Saturday (Jan. 31) to host Jackson College at 1 p.m.
