Preview: Monarchs Begin Second Half of Conference Play at Home This Week

The Monarchs host No. 2 Schoolcraft on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. before welcoming the Hawks to WSU’s Matthaei Center on Saturday at 1 p.m.

WARREN, Mich. – Macomb Women's Basketball closes out its three-game homestand with a pair of home tilts at Wayne State University's Matthaei Center in Detroit this week. On Wednesday (Feb. 4), the Monarchs will host the unbeaten and second-ranked Ocelots of Schoolcraft College at 5:30 p.m. Then on Saturday, the Hawks of Henry Ford College visit the Matthaei Center for a 1 p.m. battle.

The Monarchs enter this week with a 16-6 overall record and 5-2 mark in MCCAA Eastern Conference play. The 5-2 league record positions the Monarchs in third place, two games behind first-place Schoolcraft and one back of second-place St. Clair County Community College.

A LOOK AT SCHOOLCRAFT: The Ocelots are in the middle of the best season in program history as they enter the week with a perfect 21-0 overall record and a 7-0 mark in league action. Most recently, the Ocelots overcame a late double-digit deficit to defeat St. Clair County on the road, 78-75. The Ocelots are one of the last remaining unbeatens nationally in NJCAA Division II along with No. 1 and defending national champion, Johnson County Community College.

Briana Young leads the Ocelots with 17.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. The freshman guard registered a 29-point, 12-rebound double-double in the comeback win at St. Clair County on Saturday. Young leads a deep Ocelots team in points per game at 17.1 per contest and is followed in double figures by Riley Abney (12.9 PPG) and Siena McNitt (12.3 PPG). As a team, the Ocelots lead the MCCAA and NJCAA Region 12 with an average of 89.5 points per game.

The Ocelots are led by head coach Shay Lewis.

A LOOK AT HENRY FORD: Henry Ford finished the first half of league play 1-6 with a 2-15 overall record. The Hawks lone league win came in the conference opener on the road at Wayne County Community College on Jan. 10 by a 71-69 margin.

Freshman Teona Gillette has been a bright spot for the Hawks, averaging team highs in points (16.9 PPG), rebounds (9.2 RPG) and assists (2.1 APG). Another player to watch is Landen Smith, who's tallied 12.1 points per game.

Henry Ford is led by head coach Charles Perez.

A LOOK AT MACOMB: The Monarchs earned a 69-64 home victory over Jackson College on Saturday to move into sole possession of third place in the MCCAA East. The win extended the Monarchs' winning streak to three in a row and marked the first time they defeated the Jets since Nov. 11, 2017.

MyKenzi Harris led the Monarchs with 22 points behind a 4-of-9 effort from 3-point land. Janiya McWilliams had another solid all-around game with 16 points, 11 rebounds and six assists, while A'Liyah Forris had 15 points and four assists and Hannah Tamou posted 10 points and six rebounds.

Forris has averaged 13.5 points per game this year while Harris isn't far behind with 13.1 points per game. McWilliams is averaging 7.3 rebounds and a team-high 3.2 assists per game along with 10.9 points per contest.

As a team, the Monarchs are averaging 69.6 points per game and are shooting 39.6 percent from the field to rank inside the top 10 in the MCCAA in both categories. Kirk Carolan's team has continued to be strong on the defensive end, recording 10.6 steals per night.

LAST MEETINGS: Macomb opened conference play on Jan. 10 with a 63-53 loss to Schoolcraft in Livonia. The Monarchs held a lead through three quarters of play before the Ocelots' depth proved to be the difference late.

The Monarchs bounced back a few days later with a 94-54 victory over Henry Ford in Dearborn on Jan. 14. Forris scored a game-high 21 points, connecting on four triples in the victory. The road victory pushed the winning streak over the Hawks to 22 straight.
